This site of PMQ has inherited very rich historic and contextual qualities, so the conservation philosophy is to devise different ways to better exhibit the existing historical elements to the general public. The design team not only maintained the façade and streetscape, but also the interior spatial qualities. The old layout for lodging has been adaptively reused for mixed new functions including residences, workshops, etc. Alterations are mostly introverted and transparent, e.g. UIA, the Cube, glass canopy, etc, so as to harmoniously co-exist with the original fabric and streetscape. This approach has preserved the historical relics as far as practicable, which also greatly reduced construction wastes and associated pollutions that could otherwise be generated.

Towngas is one of the largest energy suppliers in Hong Kong, operating with world-class corporate management and leading-edge business practices. With the ultimate aim of protecting environment, they have fully integrated environmental consideration into the business model. Towngas Headquarters have achieved numerous building sustainability objectives and it is the first non-residential building in Hong Kong which has achieved the highest level of recognition under the BEAM Plus Final Assessment for existing buildings.

During the visit, Towngas will deliver a presentation to introduce their environmental initiatives and achievements. There will also be a guided tour to visit their green and innovative facilities such as oil-free variable speed water-cooled chiller, roof organic garden, green kitchen and the hall of innovation.

“How to provide a sustainable living environment from a derelict Grade II Historic Building located within an industrial area which is subject to severe noise pollution from nearby industrial buildings and transportation facilities, and at the same time, to maximise the development potential of the site as well as to conserve the historical values of this 53 years old architecture?” This is the biggest challenge of this project.

Wah Ha Estate is converted from the historical Chai Wan Factory Estate built in 1959.  It is the last surviving H-shaped factory building in Hong Kong.  The Government announced the conversion in 2012 with an aim to increase and expedite the short-term public housing supply.  The project underwent an extremely fast track programme completing in 2016 providing 187 flats to about 600 tenants who are on waiting list. 

Hysan Development Company Limited is a leading property investment, management and development company in Hong Kong with an investment property portfolio of over 4 million square feet of high quality office, retail and residential space. With roots in the district since the 1920s, Hysan is one of the largest commercial landlords in Causeway Bay. Its latest milestone development, Hysan Place, demonstrates Hysan’s commitment to find greener solutions for its buildings and for Causeway Bay as a whole. It is the first mixed-use office and vertical mall complex in Greater China to be awarded Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum certification for Core and Shell by the USGBC.

GREEN INITIATIVES

Originally named “Hei Lo”, King Yin Lei was built by Mr. Shum Yat-chor and Mrs. Shum Li Po-lun in 1937. Mr. Shum Yat-chor was a notable merchant and philanthropist in Xinhui of Guangdong Province.  King Yin Lei has been a popular spot for taking photographs by visitors. The mansion has been featured in films of international renown such as "Soldier of Fortune" (1955) and a locally produced television series "Delightful Dream of the Capital" (1980).

As the Peak area was a traditional residence of foreigners, the location of King Yin Lei symbolizes the rise of the Chinese merchant class. It also represents an earlier phase of Hong Kong history when the upper-class residential area took shape in the Mid-levels.

King Yin Lei reflects the excellence of design and construction in both Chinese and Western architecture, which is a rarity in Hong Kong as well as an outstanding work of art.

This guided tour will provide participants with a valuable opportunity to take a closer look at King Yin Lei.

The Energizing Kowloon East Office (EKEO) Temporary Office is a champion of sustainability by using integrated green building technologies and features, lean construction methods and low embodied energy materials.  The building adopts modular construction approach by using recycled freight containers and reusable structural steel members, which can be easily dismantled and reused at other site.  It is the first temporary office building which is given the BEAM Plus NB V1.1 Platinum rating.

To transform Kowloon East into a green community and promote sustainable development, we advocate low-carbon and environmentally-friendly designs in buildings. On public projects, low carbon and sustainable design concept is employed in government projects. On private sector, EKEO coordinated with government departments/ bureaux to specify in the land sale conditions for private development to achieve Gold or above rating under BEAM Plus NB, raise the greening ratio, provide smart meters and EV charging facilities, to name but a few.  We also encourage the developers to adopt low-carbon architectural designs in order to minimise the impacts on the environment.  To promote low carbon buildings, a Green Map is developed at the website of EKEO.  It highlights Green Buildings and Green Check Points in Kowloon East to provide diversified environmental friendly information to the public.

The Trade and Industry Tower (TI Tower) comprises a 22-storey tower and a single storey Community Hall. 

In keeping with the “Green City” concept in Kai Tak Development Area, emphasis of the project is placed on energy conservation and greening.  A series of renewable energy technologies, including photovoltaic system, solar hot water system, solar chimney and daylight suntubes are incorporated.  In addition to lush landscaping at ground floor, landscaped deck and the main roof, the project also features vertical greening on building facades. In terms of recycled and environmental features, the project uses rainwater for landscape irrigation and adopts an automatic refuse collection system as well as uses low-emitting materials.  Also, the project is connected to the District Cooling System in the Kai Tak Development Area for air-conditioning.

“How to create a sustainable living environment right next to a cross harbour tunnel portal in a compact city?”

Being a green estate completed in 2011 featuring universal accessibility and mixed use,  Yau Lai Estate Phase 5 provides homes for 2002 families in two 39-storey housing blocks, alongside169 car parking spaces, a Day Care Centre for the Elderly, an Early Training and Education Centre and a Kindergarten; all blend in with a landscape podium with noise abatement measures in a garden setting.

Showcasing about 10 green features, the planning and design theme for Yau Lai Estate Phase 5 is to create a sustainable community for a green and healthy living habitat through a holistic approach to optimize the development potential and enhance the built environment in the neighbourhood. It is an integral part of Yau Lai Estate comprising a total of 13 residential buildings and a shopping centre.

The project is a pilot proposal for URA’s ‘Flat-for-Flat’ exchange scheme with focuses on building community, sustainability, modest yet practical design. It comprises three 23-storey towers, an elderly friendly low-rise block, and a retail block.

Multiple levels of communal spaces encourage community building and enhance connections and communication. Central courtyard is infused with community rooms, children’s play, tai-chi area and urban farm; Low rise block rooftop garden provides green space for passive use; the Roof Clubhouse has a jogging track alongside outdoor fitness equipment, barbecue area and multi-purpose rooftop pavilions.

The design has achieved BEAM Plus Platinum rating (provisional).

Converted from a former air cargo terminal building, the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) headquarters is a leading showcase of energy efficiency features and green practices in Hong Kong. It is also the first government building to have attained Platinum Rating for both “BEAM Plus Existing Buildings” and “BEAM Plus Neighbourhood” certification. The building houses EMSD’s diverse operational activities, provides a state-of-the-art Education Path for thousands of students and visitors every year, and makes available a green piazza that the public can access and enjoy every day.

Highlights of the visit will include a guided tour of its indoor and outdoor facilities including various models, a newly revamped Exhibition Gallery, diverse energy efficiency and renewable energy features such as an extensive rooftop PV system, roof gardens, solar sunpipes, vertical green walls, a solar heating water system, a grey water treatment plant and a new Building Energy Management System.

Visitors will also tour the adjacent North Plant, one of the two plants of the District Cooling System (DCS) at Kai Tak Development which EMSD designed, built and operates. This is the first large-scale DCS in Hong Kong and showcases state-of-the-art technologies. Upon full completion in 2022, the DCS will have a total cooling capacity of about 284 megawatts, serving 1.7 million square metres of non-domestic air-conditioned floor area and will save up to 85 million kilowatt-hours of electricity consumption every year.

Hang Seng Management College, a self-financed higher education institutions in Hong Kong, has undergone a strategic campus expansion plan in 2012, including construction of two academic buildings, a sports and amenities centre and residential colleges, with commitment towards sustainable green development for improvement of the quality of built environment and optimizing usage of existing and new facilities to align with the college development to a private university in 2018. The major green features include: district cooling system for the new buildings to reduce overall cooling capacity required, chilled ceiling system of higher cooling performance, extensive application of rapidly renewable bamboo in interior fitting-out works and furniture, bamboo planting over soft landscape, as well as organic farm enabling green education.

Science Park Phase 3 is a “living laboratory” where the buildings are designed on sustainability principles and make use of three key design principles of reduction, efficiency and generation, to encourage smarter use of resources and a greener lifestyle at workplace. The Phase 3 project obtained LEED V2009: Platinum (Core and Shell) recognition conferred by the US Green Building Council, and received the Grand Award in the New Building Category (Completed Buildings) in the Green Building Awards 2014.

The Green Trail walks you through 17 selected green building design features in Phase 3. Along the way, you can enjoy the tranquil landscape of the Park and at the same time, discover how technological innovations have emerged into modern architectural design and shape our way towards a greener future.

The Old Tai Po Police Station is a Grade 1 historic building, built in 1899. Under Batch II of the "Revitalising Historic Buildings Through Partnership Scheme", the Development Bureau of the Government of the HKSAR collaborates with Kadoorie Farm and Botanic Garden to transform the heritage site into a "Green Hub for Sustainable Living”. Through an integrated approach to conserve the historic buildings, old and valuable trees and an ecologically important egretry surrounding the heritage site, the Green Hub demonstrates how we can live sustainably while at the same time respecting nature and respecting each other.

The Revitalisation of the Old Tai Po Police Station into a Green Hub for Sustainable Living was recognised with an Honourable Mention in the 2016 UNESCO Asia-Pacific Awards for Cultural Heritage Conservation in 2016. The Green Hub also won the Grand Award (Existing Buildings Category: Completed Projects - Institutional Building) and Special Citation in Eco-service Infrastructure Network under the Green Building Award 2016 jointly organised by the Hong Kong Green Building Council and the Professional Green Building Council.

T ▪ PARK is the new state-of-the-art Sludge Treatment Facility located in Nim Wan, Tuen Mun. The “T” stands for "transformation" which reflects the vision to embrace the concept of “turning waste to energy” and “driving positive change in people’s attitude and behaviour towards greener lifestyles”.

The unique self-sufficient facility features a variety of advanced technologies combined into a single complex: sludge incineration, power generation, seawater desalination and wastewater treatment. It also features a landscape green area and various recreational, educational and ecological facilities to provide the public with an introduction to the benefits of the sustainable waste management solution and to help encourage the development of recycling and upcycling culture at the community.

Hung Fuk Estate was honoured Grand Award in Green Building Award 2016 for its sustainability and livability through site specific design and passive environmental initiatives.

Hung Fuk Estate is a public housing project completed in May 2015.  The estate provides homes for 4,905 families in nine domestic blocks ranging from 16 to 24 storeys, alongside other ancillary facilities such as shopping centre, wet market, carpark, and landscaped open spaces.  One important facility is a well-equipped public transport interchange (PTI) for residents’ convenient accessibility and mobility. The PTI cover design is innovative and environment-friendly.  

The development successfully creates a good quality living environment in harmony with the countryside.  It also creates well-defined spaces for various community activities nurturing the growth of cultural identity of the estate.

IBR Headquarters is a National 3-Star green building incorporating more than 40 sustainable technologies through the use of integrated design principles. It is a Chinese style low-cost green building demonstration project, with land occupation of 3,000 m2 and total floor area of 18,200 m2. To better direct the green building design, IBR created a green philosophical view of “balanced, time-space considered, systematic”, a green building technology of “local, low-energy consumptive and elaborated” guidelines and a green building of “policy, market and technology” integrated system.

The International Low-carbon City with a total planned area of 53 m² and a building area of 1.8 million m², took about 8 years to complete its construction. As a flagship project for China-EU cooperation on sustainable urbanisation, Shenzhen International Low-carbon City is set to make great efforts to build national comprehensive experimental zone for low-carbon development with its strategic positioning as forerunner in climate friendly city construction, emerging low-carbon industries, leading area of low-carbon life style as well as demonstration area of international cooperation.
